This week, I hosted historians Tamara Maatouk and Lacy Murphy to talk about one of my favorite films: The Battle of Algiers. Sixty years after the film debuted at the Venice Film Festival, our one-hour webinar covered what it got right about the Algerian War, how it fit into the Arab world’s socialist sixties film scene, and what lessons it offers for today’s liberation struggles. We also addressed audience questions on how to teach the film, whether the Vietnam War was on the filmmakers' minds at the time, and parallels to today's narrative war over the genocide in Gaza.
