Journos on Journos: Fionn Pooler

A black-and-white photo of Fionn sipping an espresso in the bottom left corner; a thought bubble overhead has The Pourover logo in it. The background is article blurbs from Fionn's site.
Fionn Pooler writes The Pourover, a newsletter about coffee—and so much more.

This edition of Journos on Journos features Fionn Pooler, a Scotland-based independent journalist who publishes one of my favorite newsletters. Fionn calls The Pourover "a newsletter about coffee," but that's only part of the story. He covers issues most industry magazines won't touch, demystifies the behemoth industry's climate and labor impacts, and publishes intimate profiles of the producers, roasters, and baristas who bring us the coffee we love.

If you want to keep up on Fionn's work, grab a subscription to The Pourover — the site is reader-backed, and every dollar (er, British pound) counts!

When we caught up last week, Fionn told me how he got into the coffee world, which stories have been the most meaningful and the most fun to write, and, of course, what coffee he's been enjoying lately. Here's our conversation:

Marianne Dhenin: How did you get into coffee, and when did you start thinking about the industry more critically as something that could and should be reported on from so many angles?
