Syrians Want Their Revolution to Be Green

I’m in Atmos today on how Syria’s transitional government is approaching environmental recovery and climate change adaptation after rebel fighters toppled the long-ruling Assad regime in December 2024. Climate advocates urge that a just transition in the nation must also be a sustainable and inclusive one, and they are stepping up to help deliver it.
However, concerns remain over the government’s willingness to engage with community-based organizations and include minority groups. There are also questions about whether the international community will do its part to back Syrian-led efforts and constrain Israel, which has expanded its illegal occupation in southern Syria in recent months, confiscating land and homes, killing farmers, shelling urban centers, and wreaking further environmental damage.
